WHEELIE AND THE CHOPPER BUNCH #1 May 1975

Wheelie And The Chopper Bunch came late in the Hanna Barbera line of titles for Charlton, but was by no means an also-ran series to their "biggies" such as The Flintstones.
Indeed, if anything, the clever and quite funny scripts by,judging from the style, Nick Cuti and downright stellar art by Joe Staton and John Byrne (who handled the the art chores on the bulk of Wheelie's 7 issue run) made this one the standout H-B titles. Wheelie remains one of Charlton's funniest licensing efforts of the 70's.

This first issue, Staton handles all the comics stories, while Byrne gives us three illos for a two-page text story.

  1. I'm very glad to see one of Charlton's most overlooked gems get some due attention. This was a run I cherished and enjoyed immensely at the time. Better than the cartoon itself by a goodly margin.

    1. Rip: from Joe Staton earlier this morning: "That was my mother's favorite of all my jobs. She'd ask me occasionally if I was ever going to draw "those cute little cars" again."
Also-Joe and Nic have confirmed they will be providing a NEW 20 page E-MAN story to my fanzine The Charlton Arrow! Due to previous commitments, it will be around June before they deliver it, but it IS coming!
